CENELEC Standards in the Electromagnetic fields to protect humans
Over the last decades, due to technology advancements, human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) has increased. This exposure comes from many different sources (mobile phones, broadcasting antennas, etc…) and happens frequently in everyday life.
A big milestone has been achieved by CENELEC’s Technical Committee 106X on ‘Electromagnetic fields in the human environment’. They have recently produced and published a series of 8 standards for measuring and limiting electromagnetic fields from products
with respect to the exposure of people. Four of this series were published early October and the remaining 4 will be published at the beginning of November 2017.
In this rather complex area, up-to-date standards referencing established international safety limits protect the users of equipment and allow manufacturers to be confident that their products are both safe and meet the requirements of European product directives.
Two of the new standards published address mobile phones that are used against the head and close to the body. Two other standards address mobile phone base-stations and one standard addresses anti-theft and RFID equipment. The other three new standards
are generic and together provide a framework that covers any product without its own specific standard.
It is important to note that for the first time, these standards require that products be tested under reasonably foreseeable use conditions, and they cover products used both professionally as well as for the large public.
The publication of these 8 standards in the electromagnetic field is a significant advancement in this sector to protect users from the harmful effects of electromagnetic magnetic fields.
